O.H.M.A.D. Day 12: Pumpkinhead (1988)


Pumpkinhead is a nasty slice of southern-gothic revenge starring Lance Henrikson (Near Dark, Aliens) as the lead character Ed Harley.  Harley is a single father and the proprietor of a rural grocery store in the deep south.  He lives alone with his young son, whom he loves dearly.  After his son is accidentally killed by a group of teen dirt-bike riders, Harley seeks some the dark magic of a local witch for revenge.  Harley and the witch summon the demon Pumpkinhead, but Harley soon finds that this isn’t what he bargained for. Phantasm II (1988)


Sometime in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-eight, I was hanging out in the lobby of a movie theater with my parents looking at posters and being enthralled at one for an upcoming film called Phantasm II.  “What’s a phantasm?”, I asked my mom, followed by “There’s a Phantasm part one?”.  I immediately had to look up the word “phantasm” in the dictionary, and tried to get my parents to let me rent the first movie.  I was unsuccessful on the latter, but somehow managed to get them to rent Phantasm II for me shortly upon it’s release on VHS.  We had a car that was broken down and I think they were more preoccupied with getting it fixed than what I was watching on TV.  And so I finally saw a film that would become one of my favorites and introduce me to a series that would become a lifelong obsession. Nightcrawler (2014)

Nightcrawler is a harrowing character study about an amoral sociopath with an entrepreneurial spirit and can do attitude climbing up the ranks of freelance video services for the local news by manipulating events (and everyone around him) to suit his ends.  The story of Nightcrawler starts off  with our villain protagonist Lewis Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal, Donnie Darko, Jarhead) jobless, and trying to make ends meet by selling stolen scrap metal.  In the process, Lewis comes across a crime scene and is fascinated by a freelance news crew recording the scene.  Lewis tries to get a job with them by is turned down by the owner, Joe (Bill Paxton, Near Dark, Aliens).  Lewis pawns a stolen bike for a small camcorder and uses his wily ways and willingness to do what others won’t to go into competition with Joe by making his own videos.  He starts to sell the footage to a local news broadcaster, Nina Romina (Renee Russo, Thor, Lethal Weapon 3).  From there on, things get increasingly darker, as Louis starts to go extremes for the most compelling footage for bigger pay and more leverage over Nina and her career. O.H.M.A.D 6: Motel Hell (1980)

It takes all kinds of fritters to make Farmer Vincent’s fritters!  Veteran character actor Rory Calhoun takes the starring role as Farmer Vincent, the owner and proprietor of the seemingly innocent Motel Hello, which is marked by a neon sign in which the last “O” needs to be replaced.  As a side business Vincent sells his state wide famous smoked meats, of which he proudly boasts are all natural and use no preservatives.  But the meats aren’t exactly pork or beef — IT’S PEOPLE!
